I’m the son of an E.A. Greene deck mate. My dad, Lester, would have been on the Greene probably around 1950 or so. I was a dumb kid who didn’t ask about his life as a sailor and by the time I wanted to know, he was gone – he passed when I was 19. I enjoy readying your posts about serving our country and developing memorable friendships. Thank you for your service to the US and I wish you the best.
Served 66-68. Made WestPac and MidEast cruises. Gitmo and UNITAS vacation to Rio as well. STG3 in Fox Div with shipmates Neville, Teetsell, Hays, Groat etal. Went on to do another 20 after getting commissioned thanks to GI Bill education. Retired as CDR but you don’t know what USN is all about til you’ve been a bite hat on a tin can.
Served in Greene fm May 66 Nov 68.Made VN and Mid East cruises, and oh Yeah Unitas trip to Rio. Best years of my life. Got out in 69 went to college on GI Bill , got a commission and spent another 20. Retd 94 as CDR. Looking for sonar tech buddy shipmate Bill Neville out of Malden Mass. Shipyard in Portsmouth, dry dock in Quonset Point, end of the road at D&S Piers Norba.
Had my Midshipman cruise on BB64, Wisconsin the summer of 54 with DD711 , E. A. Greene in the fleet. I will always remember the cut of that ship especially in the north Atlantic when the breakers hid it from view. I bet it was a wild ride.Glad to read the comments from those of you who setved aboard her.
.
Served on the green from 1959 till 1962. Was in R Div as a electrician. Many good times and wonderful friends. I made 2 med cruises aboard her. Left her to go to USS Shanandoah AD 26 for yet a third med cruise 62-63. R3 Div. also good people. My Navy training enabled me to do my life career in the Electrical field.
Would like to know the name of your shipmate from Danville, Ill. as I live a few miles from there. Served on the Greene 1960-1961 TAD to Radar school
I served on the green from September 63 September 65. Lots of work and plenty of fun would do it again in a minute
Served, but not really honorably, from 69 till 72 in Bravo3 as Boilerman. Sorry I don’t remember names on here from same time without looking at cruise books which I still have. Do remember CO Dietz. Had CP. Mast with him and a XO Mast while he was on board. Still had a good time even though I was young and really dumb. So hello to those I served with and those I still miss B. Sheehan, G. Moore,. J. Weir, J. Kellter? and those in the IC rate if I’m correct. And yes I do remember the Green Machine. I was buddies with all of them even crazy BM3rd class Parker I believe.
Served on the Greene 1960-1961 out of boot. Was TAD radar A school. Left to school just prior to the Med cruise and missed out on much. Was on deck gang at first but moved up to radar later. Remember very few, but I do remember Bowles and Olson from the deck gang. Can’t remember anyone from radar. Very sad. I think I do remember Crowley who posted on this page. Was on board during the Dominion Republic dictator assassination and were sent down. An awesome sight and display of Naval power. Never any mention of this in any publications. The DDR seems to be a forgotten ship but not by me. GREATEST time of my single life . Calm winds and following seas!!! Buy the way, to Earl Brown, would like to know the name of your friend from Danville, Ill., as I live just 8 miles from there and just missed serving with him by a short time.
I served on the “steaming Green” from 62 until 67. Saw a lot of the world, including Vietnam. I was a BT2 when I left, and made BT1 shortly after leaving. A great bunch of troops in “B” Division. Diagnosed with asbestosis, but I’m 77, and still here.
For Lt. Clark (Robert). He was on board when I was there too. He posts a lot of photos on different sites. BOB
I forgot to add Butler to that esteemed group from DC/SF. What ever happened to Scheer (a/k/a Shaffer as Naylor called him). Naval Intel dragged him off one day and he never returned. Rumor was he was dating an Admirals daughter. Take it from there. He was from Calif.
Just to set the record straight, I was DC 2, not a shipfitter. Guys in gang included Naylor, Scheer, Gordon SF1, etc. The engineering group was a tight group. I remember Capt. Dietz; he was CO when I was \on board. I also saw Gary Farrar’s name; looks like he stayed in and went all the way to MCPO and retired in 1993. Do you remember corpsman Dennis Bell; he lives in Wilmington, NC. We got out of the Navy the same day. I remember Don Rogers and Tom (John Fairs friend) in the electrical group. They had a really good guy that was 1st Class. I also remember Bill DeVault. Hope all of you are well. Go TERPS!!!!!
First time here. Saw my old buddy’s name here.
Jim Bartoe. We served together from 1954 to 1956 when I retired as a Sonarman.
I did notice one thing here, you people are a bunch of youngsters.
Jerry Sanford, SO2, USN, Ret.

Hello Mr bridges from sam in R division with schaeffer rezendes and gore and Clarence neal enjoyed a lot of travel let me know where you are at
on board 1967-1968 Mid East cruise. From NYC
Hi Bill Devault,
Ducks full name was Larry Daugherty. He was from New York I believe. Hardest working guy on the ship. Bob Neff, shipfitter, and I have been connected by email for some years now. Only other shipmate I have seen or heard from, before you, is Don Rogers, who lives in the West part of Virginia, one of my best friends while on board. My wife and I stopped close by and I found him in the phone book. We had a good visit. Where are you now? And how are you doing. Respond directly to johnsfair@gmail.com. Great to here from you.
Served as CO August 1969-May 1971. Wonderful crew with great experiences from GTMO late 1969, MED cruise March-September 1970, through overhaul 1971. Highlight of my career in the U. S. Navy!
Many may remember the “Greene Machine” band which entertained many ship alongside during UNREPs, and in port.
Fond memories!

I served on the Steaming Greene from 1956 50 1858 I was a FireControlman 3 aand was on her when we went into
isreal to take out US Citizens
I was from Texas and served from 10/62 to 9/64 in the Deck Force. At the end of my 2-year Reserve Enlistment, i was coxswain of the whaleboat, A big promotion from the Paint Locker. -). I remember Whitey from NY, Sullivan from Mass, Gator from Louisana, Wolfe from VA, Red from Houston. John Huber from PA we got too drunk and fought the SP Seals in St Thomas and they drug us back to our ship? All the guys I mentioned went home before me, but FYI I got lucky and was the first guy in our division to become a BM3 in 28 years and as a reservist at that. I got my crow and two days later I was discharged two weeks early to go to college, After school, I returned to the Navy and was medically discharged from Flight School in Pensacola. I was there just long enough to wear the beautiful Navy Officers uniform.
now live in Silicon Valley,
On the Saturday night before the Cuban Crisis started our squadron in Charleston gathered men from each of the 11 ships and transferred them to the three ships sent to Cuba for recon. Forty eight of us from the Greene was transferred to DDR 882 USS Furse we went straight to Havana Harbor. If you were one of those guys you are eligible for a service medal. I wrote the story to the Navy facility in St Louis that handles the records and they sent me Special Medal, I forgot what it was called, yellow with red & green stripes, I asked them for a Medal of Honor but am still waiting for that one. -)
At the end of the Cuban Crisis, we were put ashore in Key West and flown back to Charleston on Navy Planes.
Interestingly, the early deployment of the 3 ships is not mentioned in any of the records of events of the Cuban Crisis. Obviously, we were there to eavesdrop.
Anyone remember that event?
A month or two later, the Greene was chosen to be the first DDR for a FRAM job to a DD, We sailed from Charleston SC to Charlestown, MA 12/62 to 7/63? During FRAM we were drydocked and lived in barracks. I and a shipmate from Danville IL took a Fleet-wide exam and got to go to Harvard, Of course, no one believes that story. But at least we were allowed to wear civies in town! He was from Danville IL. We sailed from Boston to our new home port in Norfolk where we sailed consistently with the Enterprise CVA 65 and the Canberra. We were our group’s flagship with the newest Sonar the first DD with DASH (Drone AntiSubmarine Helicopter) and ASROC. Remember the first ASROC firing, when the Nuclear Gunners Mate forgot to open the launch pad door before firing? haha
I particularly would like to hear from the guys I’ve mentioned and others from that Deck Force and anyone deployed with me for the Cuban Crisis.
Earl Brown, tall, skinny kid from Texas, now lives in Silicon Valley.
