I am looking for any help in filing a VA claim for a-fib caused by exposure to chemicals on the ship. I was a boatswains mate from May 1969 until Sep 1972. I made cruises to Gitmo twice, Mediteranian twice, North Atlantic once. Any help anyone can give will be helpful. I was on board ship with MM Michael Boyles. He was my engine man on my liberty boat. He was a really good man that we lost that day.

Served as a MM in both engine-rooms from Jan 69 to Aug 72. No BT was ever Captain Mast for BTFn Boyle’s Death while water cleaning a hot boiler stack in Athens Greece. Also ship colliding with oiler while going along side was caused by MM1 in after engine-room swapping engine lube oil pump causing loss of pressure. He was never Captain mast either. unreal

I also remember Boyle. Country. I pulled rank on him and took over his watch that day. I was down in bravo one when he fell cleaning the stack. Did not know anything happened till I got off watch. He should not of been there it was not 24 hours since the boiler was shut down. A sad day that I will never forget. I was supposed to escort ;his remains to his home but found out I had hep the next day. A young man who left us to soon. I have always remembered that day sadly and with some quilt,

Served on board 1970 to 1972.
Will never forget David M Boyle who died as a result of steam burns while cleaning part of the boiler. I still have nightmares from that day. So sad David was a happy go lucky guy. Always smiling. May he rest in peace

We ran aground thanks to port captain ….bent our Screw ( propeller ) had to go in dry dock for 10 days in Karachi Pakistan …great times

When I finish damage control School in Philadelphia I received orders to the Eugene a green. I immediately found out the ship was leaving for Mediterranean cruise. I stayed aboard the ship until it was decommissioned in 1972. I left the service on August 4th 1973 after serving on board the USS Vulcan from my last 10 months of service. I left as a second class hull maintenance technician.

I am now 72 years old and noticed this site while trolling the USS Eugene A. Greene. On or about Oct/Nov 1971, at D & S piers Norfolk, I was reporting and going up the gangplank with my orders and my seabag. As a USNR, I was striking as an Electrician’s Mate. I was immediately assigned as a Boiler Tech (BT). On December 1, 1971, DD711 departed Norfolk on a 7-month Med Cruise, returning in June 1972. David Michael Boyle BT3, during the cruise, had died aboard ship. I remember seeing him at the top of the stack. He was in shock. I witnessed HMC Bailey in the sick bay provide the best medical care possible. I am writing this because BT3 Boyle was a fine sailor, and he deserves to be not forgotten and honored. Sad for his family and all who knew him. RIP
