Years Served: 1954 – 1957…The best years that I spent in the Navy was on the old E.A. Greene.

Years Served: 1964 – 1965 – 1966…Started out in the wonderful deck force (necessary evil). Went into the Ship’s Office after 6 months and worked with YN1 CHETAITIS, PN2 WAY, YN3 STONE. A great group of people. Also close friends with CS3 Tommy Krass & YNSN Bud Tirak of Erie, Pa. It was great sea duty with a great crew. I would love to do it all over again. I attended the reunions in 94 (NORVA) and 95 (Charleston). I wish they would go back to NORVA. I also would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. After I left the GREENE I returned to CIVLANT but after l8 mos. I went back in. I wound up in the career recruiting force retiring in Jun 1986 as a YNCS and a Zone Supervisor in Columbus, Oh. I currently have 22 yrs. service with the Ohio Dept. of Corrections working at the maximum security prison in Lucasville, Oh.

Years Served: …My father S1 George J. McEvoy served on the Greene between 1944 and 1949 as a signalman and fireman. He had many fond memories of his service. I’d like to say thank you to all the service men and women of our country’s greatest generation.

Years Served: 1971-decomishining…the greene was my first ship. i was an HTFN we did a med cruise in 73 i believe. i remember shipmates named kesnick, hovendick, rupel, troutman, and many others. i remember our co, capt patti, who one time stopped the ship in the middle of the ocean and launched his captains boat and took us all out (a few at a time) to drink a couple of 711 beers, (remember when 711 stores started up? they had 711 beer). i had alot of respect for that man after that. it was a great time an i salute all DD711 shipmates!

Years Served: Aug 71 – Decom…The first of many ships that I served aboard. But she was by far the greatest adventure of my life and the beginning of a 26 yr career. Like that first piece of tail, you’ll never forget a second of the experience  Msg to Bill Oster: e-mail me at djkleaver@gmail.com. Would like to hear from you. And by the way, that booze truck that came to the ship was probably for you!!!

Years Served: 1971 to decomissioning…Last Tin Can from 71 t0 decom. Was CMAA, steamed with HMC Doc Bailey. No better way to see the world than on a can . Lots of great memories from Norway and Hamburg,Germany stops. Anybody remember the Reeperbaum street in Hamburg? Spent 3 months attached to SNS Churruca (formerly USS E.A.Greene) Man, did those guys love to drink!!! The booze supply truck was at the ship more often than the fuel barge. Greetings!
PN3 P. Rowe here!
Great site and remember those of you that have posted that served aboard Eugene A. Greene (DD-711) during the Deployment to Viet Nam 1966 – 1 June – 17 December 1966. Our Destroyer Squadron was the third Squadron deployed from the Atlantic Fleet to support USA operations in and around Viet Nam.
Have been reviewing our cruise book recently. Great memories indeed!
All the BEST to those who have served and to those currently servicing our Great Nation!

I was an MM3 in the engine room. Proud to be a member of the the crew of the Greene from ‘64 – ‘68. I had many good friends and so happy to hear from Kanuse I was in a Navy uniform and a ‘35 Chevy for this years Veteran’s Day parade as past commander of VFW POST 128. Everything that you allposted brought back fond memories of the 40 countries I visited. Closing with a salute to the members of the Greene.
