Years Served: 1965 – 1966…I was fortunate enough to be a member of a great crew, aboard a great old ship we cruised around the world and saw action in Viet Nam (WHERE WE KICKED SOME ASS!) While on this cruise we managed to add these to make our bones a bit more salty…..Shellback,Golden Dragon, Order of Magellan, Order of the ditch and order of the rock. I am still in contact with Brian Atwood, Dan Sinclair and Dick Raduenz. I was also in contact with Ray Peterson, but sadly he has passed away. Ray, Brian, Dick and myself stood watches in the after engine room , Dan was in main controal. I , as well as almost every one else, as I remember it, did a lot of bitchiing about the GD Navy back then but I have to tell you, given the chance I would do it all over again. Those were some of the best years of my life and I think back on them and the great mates I had so much fun with.

Years Served: September 1960 – January 1963…Served as Radioman Second Class (RM2) for 28 months. It was a time that burns with memories – Med Cruise, multiple trips to the Caribbean including the Cuban blockade (and my four year enlistment was extended a year but later rescinded when peace prevailed) – to my final months at Boston (Charlestown) Naval Shipyard for the Fram refurbishment.

Years Served: …Hi. My name is Josh Hollen and my dad served in the Navy in the early 1950’s. I think he served on the Eugene Greene. He was a radar man and passed away in 2005. Any info out there on the Greene during the early 50’s when he served? Was he on this ship? He mentioned the waves of the North Atlantic and of going to the Med.

Years Served: 1961-1963…Served as a Radioman, got to see the world as the Navy promised, had the time of my life, and wish somehow I could do it again! No job in the Navy better than serving on a Tin Can, especially the old 711.

Years Served: 4…I was onboard the USS Waccamaw AO-109 in the Med, summer 1970. The USS Green was coming alongside when she lost steering resulting with her slamming our starboard side aft with her forcastle. She left her starboard anchor on our whaledeck. It scared the hell out of me. I was standing on the working deck and saw the Green’s mast go almost horizontal while her hull wrapped around our fantail. I thought for sure the Green lost sailors overboard. Fantastically, no one was lost. We went to Souda Bay Crete where the Green was getting a new starboard side (forecastle). A barge crane came and got the anchor. That was the last time I saw the USS Green.
