PN3 Johnny J. Sharp served aboard USS Hopewell. (DD-681) from Apr 1965 – Apr 1967. Started out on deck force (1st Division) before transferring to OC Division (Ship’s Office). My General Quarters station was Pointer in gun mount 51 up at the bow. We performed a lot of shore bombing in Vietnam in 1966 during our WESTPAC cruise.

I was an FT on Hopewell from 9/63-9/65, made one wespac cruise, mostly in Subic Bay. In spring of 64 we were invited to Portland but on the way met a strong gale, were taking green water over the pilot house (where I rode out the storm) had some serious damage and had to pull in to SF Bay and right into drydock. About the most exciting ride of my life. My brother Jerry was also there. He passed away last August.
