My father (listed above) was on the USS Cross about the same time. He remembers seeing the typhoon damage & it being in dry dock for repairs. He was a Gunners Mate on the 5 inch stern gun. He’s been asking me to find some photos of the ship, especially on her to return to the states before first decommission in 1946.

I was aboard the Cross DE-448 in May 1945 while she was doing picket duty off Okinawa engaging the incoming Japanese Kamikaze. My duty station was radar operator and my battle station was trainer on a 40 MM gun mount. The Cross survived the War OK, but on October 9 sustained severe damage when a giant typhoon struck the fleet while anchored at Buckner Bay (Nakagusuku Wan). During the typhoon a freighter was ripped loose from it’s moorings and smashed into the stern of the Cross. The crew of the Cross was removed and placed on other ships. I was transferred to the USS Hornet, CV 12. I have fond memories of the old Cross and my wonderful shipmates.
