Years Served: my father (SM1 James J. Vencil) served from 1963 – 1965…I am the oldest son of SM1 James J. Vencil who served during the period annotated above. My father deployed from Treasure Island, California and went to Vietnam. He eventually retired in 1972 after serving as LPO of NAS Boca Chica Security, Key West Florida and then returned to his home, Harlem, NY. He passed away of pancreatic cancer on May 20, 1987 while I was stationed at Military Sealift Command in Washington, DC. He is buried in Calverton, NY in veterans cemetery. We, my siblings and I believe it was actually remnants of agent orange be it that he was a river rat while he was in Nam. I myself retired as an HM1 after 20 yrs of service in 1994. My mother says she has correspondence alluding to a Navy Achievement Medal he was to receive but it isn’t documented in the copy of his service record or DD214 that I have. Fair Winds and following Seas.
