Years Served: 1976-1979…My years abord the SAM were probably the best years in the military. We were not just a crew we were a family. Didn’t know she got cut up until 2005. The anchors are in my home state of North Carolina, about 25 miles form home. If anyone wants to contact me, here’s your chance.

Years Served: Sept. 67 thru Feb. 69…Great ship, great crew. Made RM2 before I got out. Went to Boston for the commissioning of USS Sampson DDG 102. Met 39 other crewmates from various times during her 30 years of service. They are still a great crew. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago that I was assigned to her.
Years Served: 1972 – 1975…I was a radarman (operations specialist) on the Sampson in 1972 as we sailed from Charleston, South Carolina across the Atlantic and the Med to Athens, Greece where we were homeported for the next 3 years and what an adventure! Since then I have traveled all over the world in different capacities but going there as a US Sailor was a unique experience all it’s own that not many guys ever have and one that i will never forget. If the words Crystal Flash ring a bell with anyone then you remember me! We had some amazing experiences during that time including a fire in the boiler room while up cruising in the Black Sea, circumnavigation of the Isle of Capri and the volcano Stromboli, a two month hide and seek with a Russian sub that started near Rota, Spain and went all the way across the Med to Alexandria, Egypt, the Greek military takeover from the then president/leader Pappadopolis where we woke up for our daily bus ride to work to soldiers with machine guns running through the streets and tanks stopping and inspecting traffic at most major intersections, to helping out flood victims in the exotic city of Tunis in northern Africa, and much, much, much more. If you were there then you know what i mean when i say it was quite a ride!!! Thanks for the memories!
