Years Served: 1958 – 1961…Hello Everyone I have wondered where some of you guys are now and what you are doing. I sent an e-mail to Phillip Marr a couple of months ago. I still remember some of the exciting times such as the typhoon (I still don’t know how many days) out of Japan. Tokyo Bay never looked so good. Everyone but Dirks got sick on that escapade. There were a couple of incidents that were probably classified. I was a Sonarman and knew what I had, but I didn’t know who it was or where they came from. I visited Chief John Tucker when I got off the ship. He was at a base near Fresno. I went to active Reserve when I got off the ship, a year later went to a year of active duty at a Reserve Center and then stayed in Active Reserve another four years. I retired from Southern Bell in 1995. I stay active in volunteer work in our Church and in our Baptist Assoc., and do a garden in the summer. Keeps me going.
Years Served: 1966-1969…2 Westpacs, 2 tours VN one up north
Years Served: 2…Hi all, served 2 years on the Eppy. Recall some good times. Especially prior to the decom. The last that I heard of her she was sold to some small island / country. Wonder if she is still floating? Take care.
Years Served: 1968…I joined the crew of the Eppy off the coast of Vietnam in early 1968, as a member of AS division. I was a STG 3rd class. I left the Eppy in October 1968 to be discharged from the Navy. Love to hear from old shipmates. I’ve got film of our ship firing while in the Bay down south. The film has been digitized. I now live in southern California.
Years Served: 1960-1962…I Would Like To Hear From Someone Who Remembers Me. I Played A Guitar.
Years Served: 1971 USNR Cruise, Seattle Washinton…When I first stepped aboard this Reserve Tin Can in March 1971 the Quarter Deck Piped and announced, Epperson Arriving. Little did I know they were not talking about me but about the Captian who was coming aboard with our orders for the cruise. I had a wonderful two weeks serving aboard the namesake of my third cousin who died saving his fellow Marines from a live granade in WW ll. The USS Epperson served long and proud. My Naval career was enhanced by my pride in this ship effectionatly called Eppy just as I was called from Boot Camp all the way to OCS. Anchors Away My Boys.
Years Served: 1962-1965…Love to hear from old shipmates
Years Served: 4…I served on the Eppy from July of 1970 until Feb. of 1972. Radio Shack supervisor for 2 Westpacs. Played on our awesome basketball team that lost by one point to the huge Enterprise.
Years Served: 1966-1967…Came from San Diego TAD out of D.A.S.H. school to Epperson DD-719 as part of Dash Crew. Was nice working with aviation people for a change. I was the one who fueled the Huey`s off of the fan-tail along the coast of Nam!! And found out after I left the ship a Huey landed on our deck! COOL!! :D
Years Served: 1967 to 1969…I was aboard the Epperson during our crossing of the equator ( have a few films showing the pollywog/shellback ceremony) My nickname was ‘Sticky STGN3. When I first came aboard Senior Master Chief Wallin was the third Division’s Senior non-com and a LTJG West was the third Division Offficer. Have quite a few photos. My buddie Vince Volk and his sidekick Randy were in most of these photos.
Years Served: 1970…Onboard from June to November 1970. I was an MM1 at the time in charge of the after engine room. Living in Kentucky at the present time.
Years Served: October 1972 to November 1974…The Epperson was my first ship after graduating from boot camp and MR A School. Ship deployed shortly after I reported on board. Did my first WestPac and as a 19 year old was in total awe of what I was going through. I stood watch in the enginerooms as a throttleman. Great bunch of guys! Will never forget the liberty calls in Subic! It was a cherry poppin memory. It was the beginning of a 23 year career that included 8 ships and three shore tours. I loved every minute of it. Wish I could do it all over again!
Years Served: 1970-1971…Was heloed aboard off of Vietnam from the USS Kitty Hawk to relieve 1st Class IC Man who was past his discharge date. I got out of sling and he got in, so much for IC Gang turn-over. After West-Pac finished ended up going back to submarines in Pearl. Charlie Kruger IC1
Years Served: Feb ‘68 – Dec ’69…Hi all, I served aboard the Epperson, first on the deck force for a few months, then was transfered to Radio. There was an opening in the radio room early in my 719 assignment, and because I was an amateur radio operator, I got the job. I loved the assignment, and enjoyed the tour greatly. I very ready to leave the service at the end of the last Nam tour in the latter half of 1969, but it was a great experience. I don’t remember many names of shipmates, but Vince Volk and a fellow named Loven come to mind, as well as the 1st class boatswains mate, Tucker, the other 1st class Boatswains mate – black, and whose name won’t come to mind at the moment. Chief Melton and Captain Wallace, are others. I haven’t thought on any of these things for many, many years. Brian SN3
Years Served: 1964,65,transfered in 66…Remember the days of the galloping gray goast of the vietnese coast, had a very good ceuise on the EPPY :D
Years Served: 1961 1963…Shipmates just to let you know I am still alive and kicking. Drop me email if you have time.
Years Served: Two aboard…Served on the Eppy two years as a Radarman from April 1961 thru Oct 1963. Joined the U.S. Air Force in 1968 and retired in 1985 with combined military service of twenty years. Currently living in Stafford, Virginia.
The “Eppy Maru” was classified as DDE 719 when I served aboard her April 1960 through late 1963. Wonderful memories, and am still in contact with 4 members of the sonar gang. Thanks to the PACT Act passed by Congress in 2022, I was just classified as 100% disabled by the VA because of severe exposure to red lead paint… and subesequent health issues. I also co-designed the pineapple logo for the Eppy… my first “commercial” assignment. The two of us won a week’s basket leave in Hong Kong (1962) and $25 each. We split the $50 prize in a shipwide competion.
I finished my 5 year tour of duty in Iwakuni, Japan. After the Gulf of Tonkin incident another sonarman and I were sent to the Phillipines to support patrol planes flying near Viet Nam. Thus I’m consideeed a Viet Nam Era Vet. I’m 82 and still drawing humorous art and cartoons for clients. I treasure some of my first drawings I created in the Navy. This was the beginning of a lifelong passion and an important part of my career. I’m thankfula
