I’m hoping to connect with a shipmate from my time on the Gilmore. Alex Russin, and Mike Quinn, both worked in the oil king gang with me. My time on board was from March 1968 until July 1970. I was discharged from Key West, Fl. , the Gilmore changed home ports from Charleston, SC. to Key West in July of 1970.

Am sending this for my husband due to his failing eyesight. Tim (nickname)MM3 is a planker on the Cunningham 1944-46. Ship was at Okinawa when both atomic bombs were dropped. He is now 93 yrs. old, still is able to cut the grass, and is amazing with other chores in maintaining the yard, etc. In August we will be heading toward 73 years married, two sons, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Life has blessed us greatly. The Cunningham was a great ship and I spent most of my time aboard her in the Engine Room.

I was wondering if anyone on with me from R-1 Division. I was ship fitter second class and would love connecting with some from the years 58 to 60 on the Gilmore. Started in Key West and ended in Charleston SC. Please email me if there is a reunion or a gathering of these guys. Bill

I remember the day our XO was killed on the stern of the ship when a 6 inch mooring line snapped under extreme pressure and it hit him as he stood on the stern of the ship. It was very sad because he was a people person and talked with anyone and listened to his crew. It was a very very sad day and I still remember the funeral for him.

I served aboard HW Gilmore As-16 fromJanuary 1978 until it was decommissioned in Norfolk Virginia in 1980. I worked in the 38A division 38 Shop repairing submarines. I loved the job and I had the best time of my Navy career. I was a FA when I started and ended up being a 3rd class MM and the LPO of the shop. I worked with some of the best guys in the outside repair shop and MM1 Jim Starkey and MM1 Paul Yeager who had died from lung cancer. I will never forget my years aboard the silly gilly.

Served on the last crew. Was there when they chopped her mast and towed her away to the boneyard. Sad day. I left my decom crew certificate in the “H” bit on the fantail where the XO caught the bitter end. Nice man. He used to serve us hamburgers and cheeseburgers in the hamburger line. He didn’t even have to be there that day. I may have been the last one to look him in the eyes after he had been slammed down on the deck a few feet away by that busted nylon line (rubber band). What a gash ……. MEDIC! I was # 1 lineman on the rope that broke. First day on the job, still in “I” division. “All ahead two thirds!” Damned anchor buoy. Damned storm. Damned too little tugs.

Came in December after the Barcelona cruise but just in time for the Genoa cruise.(The one that got the XO) Went on the Naples cruise and helped tear up the Piano Bar when those army guys got smart. Returned to St. Stevens and pulled up alongside our replacement, the Orion. When I found out my friend from home wasn’t on board I didn’t cross deck and brought the Gilmore home on her last cruise across the North Atlantic. The stuff that didn’t get deep sixxed along the way.

A shout out to David Reed, (Joe) Pat Walsh, Buoy Head, and all the rest of Deck II division

Phil Dea

I was on the Gilmore from Sept. 68 to Oct. 70. Was in the pipe shop. Good times!!!!

I was.stationed aboard the Gilmore from 79-80. Was an MS3 worked as supply PO in S-2 div. Worked for a short time in the galley as.night cook. Stayed in town in an apartment. Was fun times went to Barcelona, and Genoa. I stayed behind for the Naples cruise. Got stranded on the liberty boat for 19hrs. when it went into the rocks from a strong wind gust. Navy seals had to swim the lines to us cause we were too far.into the rocks for.tugs.to get.us out. Was a sad day when we lost.our XO to a freak accident. Got to ride her back to the states to decommission 5.
